October 14th 1939 in New York to Jewish
immigrant parents. Right from an early age
Ralph developed a liking for designer wear…
he preferred quality over quantity. He perhaps
had not imagined that he was soon going
to create a name for himself as a top American
fashion designer. Few people know that Ralph
also served in the United States Army (1962-64)
and never attended any fashion school to
begin his career. At 16, Ralph and his brother
decided to change their surname from Lipschitz
to Lauren and that’s how a designer
never to be forgotten by the world was born.
Ralph’s exposure to the fashion world
began as a salesman for Brooks Brothers
for whom he designed the label Polo. Thus,
with this lucky label Ralph set his own
Polo Fashions and since then there has been
no looking back for him who now is the owner
of a billion dollar empire.
